Topic of the month; Taking care in the sun
The experts are predicting a sunny summer this year…fingers crossed!!! So here are a few tips on how to protect your children from the sun!!
Lots of good sunscreens are available for kids. When faced with the overwhelming sea of sunscreen choices at drugstores, concentrate on the SPF (sun protection factor) numbers on the labels. For kids age 6 months and older, select an SPF of 15 or higher to prevent both sunburn and tanning. Choose a sunscreen that states on the label that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays (referred to as "broad-spectrum" sunscreen). To avoid possible skin allergy, avoid sunscreens with PABA, and if your child has sensitive skin, look for a product with the active ingredient titanium dioxide (a chemical-free block). For sunscreen to do its job, it must be applied correctly. Be sure to:
• Apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before kids go outside so that a good layer of protection can form. Don't forget about lips, hands, ears, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck. Lift up bathing suit straps and apply sunscreen underneath them (in case the straps shift as a child moves).
• Don't try to stretch out a bottle of sunscreen; apply it generously.
• Reapply sunscreen often, approximately every 2 to 3 hours, as recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology. Reapply after a child is sweating or swimming.
• Apply a waterproof sunscreen if kids will be around water or swimming. Water reflects and intensifies the sun's rays, so kids need

Suncare for Children
"The higher the SPF, the longer your child's skin is protected from burning."
Your child's skin is very sensitive to the suns rays. Children cannot tell you when they have had enough sun, in fact most of them cannot even shade their eyes. It's important as a parent to make sure that your child is adequately protected from the sun. The risk of developing skin cancer in later life is increased in children who have been overexposed to the sun in their early years.
Many people are confused by terms used by suncare manufacturers such as UVA , UVB, SPF and star ratings. This can make choosing the correct suncare products for your children difficult.
UV stands for ultra violet rays. The sun produces ultraviolet radiation. Two types of this radiation reach the earth's surface.
UVA Rays
Ultraviolet A rays (UVA) promote premature aging and wrinkles
UVB Rays
Uultraviolet B rays (UVB) which stimulates the production of a dark pigment in the skin called melanin. This melanin production is the skin's attempt to protect itself from the burning properties of UVB, so in fact a tanned skin is actually damaged skin.
It is the UVB rays that are the most harmful and that cause the typical sunburn. Although melanin can protect the skin to some degree it is important to remember that you can still get a sunburn when you have a tan. Your child's skin is not as thick as adult skin and does not produce as much melanin and so is far more susceptible to damage by UVB rays.
Sun Protection Factor
SPF stands for sun protection factor. This is a measure of the amount of protection a suncare product offers from UVB rays. They generally indicate how much longer you can stay in the sun without burning while using protection.
For instance, if your child starts to burn after 5 minutes in the sun without protection and you used a product with an SPF of 2, they would be protected for twice as long (10 minutes) before starting to burn. If you used a product with an SPF of 35, they could stay in the sun 35 times longer (175 minutes) without burning. The higher the SPF, the longer your child's skin is protected from burning.
Star ratings- These are used to compare the levels of UVA protection in different products. There are four such ratings from one star (good protection) to four star (maximum protection).
Choosing and using a suncare product
When choosing a suncare product, it is important to pick one with a high SPF (over 25), with a high star rating (three or four stars) and one which is waterproof.
Children's suncare products tend to be more expensive than adult ones as they contain more titanium dioxide which is responsible for the "white-look" of most high factor suncreams. This ingredient is expensive but effective and is useful, as you can see where the child is protected (visible protection).
There are also products available which you apply 1 hour before going out into the sun. These are waterproof and claim not to need re-application. If using these products, it is important to make sure that your child is fully protected (remember you can't see this protection) and to allow at least 1 hour after application before going out in the sun.
If your child suffers from eczema, look for a product which is hypoallergenic, contains no lanolin and is labelled PABA free.
While UV rays in hot countries are generally stronger than those in Ireland or the UK in summer, you should not underestimate the strength of the sun. Children are likely to get burned at home, even on overcast or breezy days when the temperature is cool.
General guidelines
Sun protection is not just for holidays, it should also be used in the garden, park or school playground.
• Sunscreens should be rubbed onto the skin,
not into it
• Apply it thickly and evenly over all exposed areas
• Take particular care of ears, neck, hands and feet, not forgetting the legs when your child is sitting in his buggy
• Re-apply generously and frequently- every one or two hours depending on the temperature, skin type, location or time of day
Other sun protection tips
Although sunscreen offers some protection, it is important to remember that it should be used in conjunction with other forms of sun protection-
• Encourage your child to wear a hat and good sunglasses (make sure they offer full 100% UV protection)
• Keep your child out of the sun during the hottest times of the day between 11.00am and 3.00 pm
• Use a parasol or sunshade and remember that your child can still be burned under an umbrella by reflected UV rays
• Babies should be kept out of the sun entirely
• If in doubt cover your child up with a thick weave loose fitting t-shirt, even while in the water
• Make sure your child gets enough fluids- offer frequent drinks, ice lollies are another easy way of making sure your child remains hydrated.
Remember there is no such thing as a healthy suntan!
Suncare for Children
If your child does suffer from sunburn there are a number of ways that you can help relieve the pain.
• Apply cool baths or cool compresses for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day. Baking soda in the water may help relieve the pain (small children may become easily chilled, so keep the water tepid)
• Apply a soothing lotion to the skin.
• Your doctor may prescribe a steroid cream to treat severe sunburn.
• An over the counter pain and fever reducer such as Calpol may be helpful.
Remember to consult your GP in cases of serious sunburn.
Seek medical assistance if:
• There are signs of shock such as faintness, dizziness, rapid pulse, rapid breathing, increased thirst, pale skin, clammy or cool skin.
• Your child has eye pain and eyes are sensitive to light.
• There are symptoms such as nausea, fever, chills or rash.
• The sunburn is severe and painful

Be sure to:
• Apply sunscreen whenever your child will be in the sun.
Water reflects and intensifies the sun's rays, so kids need protection that lasts. Waterproof sunscreens may last up to 80 minutes in the water, and some are also sweat- and rub-proof. But regardless of the waterproof label, be sure to reapply sunscreen when kids come out of the water.

Media Initiative for Children
Sharon (manager) recently attended training for the Media Initiative for Children Respecting Differences in the Ardboyne Hotel. This is training provided by the Early Years organisation and The Peace Initiatives and they aim to build a better understanding among children of physical, racial and cultural differences. Bullying behaviours and the inclusion of Traveller children are also addressed. Mother Hubbards hopes to receive the pack which accompanies the training shortly and then each centre will get the opportunity to introduce the pack to the children. Parents will be informed in more detail about when the pack is going to be introduced to their child and in what way nearer the time!

Look what we have been doing in our rooms:
Playschool Room: We have been busy learning about wild animals, you can see our display of elephants, monkeys, zebras and more inside on the wall. We have also started working on our summer display.
Montessori Room: We have been very busy learning about outer space and making our display. We have started working on our under the sea theme which we now have displayed in the room. We made seahorses and octopuses. We were also learning about the colour purple.
Afterschool Room: We have been having great fun doing science experiments, collecting bugs and insects and learning all about them. We also have been having great fun playing outdoors with the water!
Could parents of afterschool children please send in a change of clothes for their child to have in the crèche. The children are much more comfortable in their own clothes in the afternoon, especially in the warmer weather. It’s also useful to have a spare set here in case of emergencies!
Going to School (Article taken from http://www.rollercoaster.ie/)
Some Tips & resources to help your child settle in and thrive in school
Knowing Your Child is Ready for School
• Communication: Your child should be able to understand others and to be understood.
• Learning skills: Your child should be able to concentrate on a simple task, and to pay attention to people around them.
• Physical skills: Your child should have some dressing skills and be able to use the bathroom. They should also be comfortable with fine motor skills like holding a pencil or crayon.
• Social skills: Your child should be able to play with and, importantly, share with others. Also, it is important that your child can respond to instructions or correction by the teacher.
• Emotional skills: It is helpful if your child is comfortable being away from you for relatively short periods of time. If a child is confident that their parent will return they are more likely to settle in a new environment.
Helping Your Child Adjust to School
In helping your child to adjust, it is beneficial if parents have a positive and relaxed attitude towards school. Some key things to remember include:
• Visit the school with your child before the first day. As mentioned earlier, many schools have scheduled open days to facilitate this.
• Involve your child in preparations like buying uniforms, etc. Let them help pick out things like school bags, pencil cases and lunchboxes.
• Talk with your child about what they are looking forward to about school and what worries they may have, and try to answer any questions they have.
• Parents should try to take their child to school for the first few days of school. Alternatively, arrange for a familiar person to do it so that the child has a link to their home environment.
• Going with friends or an older brother or sister (if there is one) can also help.
• Familiarise yourself with school policies, for example those relating to uniforms, lunches and discipline. This will aid your understanding of the guidelines that influence your child's school day.
How to Talk to Your Child about School
As was mentioned above, talking to your child about school can help them to adjust. This continues to be important throughout their school lives.
• Talk with your child regularly about school. While this is important in itself, it also means that if a problem arises your child is used to talking about school matters.
• Remember to listen to what your child tells you. All parents lead busy lives, and sometimes it is easy to be distracted when your child is talking to you.
• Find an appropriate time and place to talk to your child. This should not be a formal time, but can be at mealtimes when the family is discussing their day, when a child has brought an art project home from school, or even on the way home from school.
• Always ask your child about their experiences in school in a casual and relaxed way. This can be difficult, particularly if you are worried about a problem or incident. Remember, the way you react to your child in this type of situation may affect whether they will come to you with their concerns again.
• However, while it is important to be relaxed, never dismiss concerns that your child may share.
How to Approach Your Child's School
Parents have many reasons to contact their child's school, ranging from getting information on school events to dealing with possible difficulties. Teachers and school staff are always willing to speak with parents, but keeping a few things in mind can help the process.
• While teachers are always willing to speak with parents, it is important to remember to find the right time to do this. The start of the school day can be very busy, so try to arrange a good time with the teacher.
• Be sure to attend any parent-teacher meetings the school organises. This gives both parents and teachers a chance to talk about a child's progress.
• If you do need to talk with the teacher about a problem your child is having remember to be calm and to communicate your concerns clearly. Listen to what the teacher has to say and work together to find the best way to tackle the problem.
• Attending school events, such as sports days and Christmas concerts, can also be very important. Not only do children enjoy the chance to share their achievements with their parents, but these events also provide the parents with a useful means of strengthening their relationship with their child's teacher, as well as getting to know other staff including teachers your child may have in the future and the school principal.

Topic of the month
Recycling; how can we make a difference?
Earth day is held on the 22nd of April every year. It is held to celebrate the importance of the environment and to ensure action in order to protect our environment.
All about recycling
Recycling conserves our natural resources and uses less energy from the environment. Saving energy in Ireland means that emissions of greenhouse gas from cars, trucks and other pollutants are reduced at the recycling power plant and our energy sources aren’t depleted as quickly.
What can be recycled?
- Aluminium cans - glass - paper
-Plastic - cardboard - metal
-Computers -batteries -old furniture
-Clothes -books - Cds
Interesting facts about recycling
• 60% of rubbish that ends up in dustbins can be recycled
• 50% of waste in the average dustbin in Ireland can be composted
• Up to 70% of a vehicle can be recycled
• Despite the fact that glass is recyclable only 15% of the glass we throw away is recycled
• Every Sunday 90% of all newspapers are thrown away which is equivalent off putting 500,000 trees in a landfill site.
• Households in Ireland produced 10 million tones of waste in 2005 of which 18% was collected for recycling. This is in contrast to other Eu countries that recycle 55% of their waste
So if you have not recycled before, maybe its time to start. Ask your local bin collector about getting a separate recycling bin. If you already recycle you can always do more to help protect the environment!!
