Flowerhill November Newsletter 2010

Mother Hubbards Newsletter
November 2010

Look who has a birthday this month:

John Francis in the Montessori room who turned 4 years
Stacy in the Montessori room who also turned 4 years

Welcome

We would like to welcome Aronas and Muddasser to Mother Hubbards and their parents.  We hope you are all very happy here with us.

Reminder of Christmas Holidays

The sessional Montessori children (9.00-12.00) will finish up on Wednesday 22nd December at 12.00 and will return on Monday 10th January 2011 at 9.00am.

For all other children the centre will close on Thursday 23rd December at 6.00pm and will re-open on Tuesday 4th January 2011.

Weather

As the weather is getting colder could all parents please send in a suitable coat and a hat, scarf and gloves for their child for outdoor play.  Wellies and raincoats should be provided for wet days.  You can label these items and leave them in the centre if you wish to do so.

Hand Sanitiser

We would like to remind all parents to use the hand sanitiser in the hallway (located under the notice board) when entering and exiting the building to help stop the spread of infection in the centre.

Parent’s Notice board

We have a parent’s notice board located in the hallway and also inside the door (on the right) in the Montessori room.  We would like to remind parents to check these regularly for notices and updates about activities, parties and goings on in the centre.

Smile
We have our photographer Dermot Ward coming to the centre on Thursday 25th November to take photos of the children.  Parents are under no obligation to buy these photos and only do so if they wish after seeing the photos.  Look out for signs in the centre with details of prices etc.

Gymboree

Can any parent who is interested in their child starting Gymboree classes here with us in Mother Hubbards please return the consent form with €20 to a member of staff before Thursday 18th November.  We need a minimum of 10 children for the class to go ahead and your place in only confirmed upon payment.  If you have any queries regarding this please contact Sharon (Manager).

Good Luck

Sharon (Manager) will be leaving to go on maternity leave on Friday 17th December.  There will be a Manager, Edel Dwyer, starting on the 13th December to take over from Sharon.  A letter will follow to all parents with further details in the coming weeks.

Solstice Arts Centre

The children are making some Christmas decorations to help decorate the Solstice Arts Centre Christmas Tree. On the 2nd December at 6.30 pm the Christmas tree lights will be switched on so why not go have a look at all their beautiful decorations!

Look what we have been doing this month:
The children in the Montessori room have been very busy this month, learning about people who help us in our community e.g. doctors, nurses, firemen, garda, post-man, lollipop lady/man etc.

If there are any parents who work in these professions or know someone who does that would like to come in and talk to the children about what they do (for a few minutes) we would love to hear from you.  The children were really interested in this topic and would really enjoy it.  Please contact Sharon or a member of staff.

The Montessori children were also learning about road safety this month and enjoying the new road safety pack we received from the Meath County Childcare Committee.  The children have started letter recognition, learning the letters ‘s’, ‘a ‘and ‘t’ this month. They will be moving onto the letter ‘i’, ‘p’ and ‘n’ next.  When doing these letters we focus more on the sound each of them make more so than the name of the letter.  The children are also learning songs with actions to go along with each letter they learn.

The afterschool children have been making jewellery and having fun playing hairdressers and with the clics.  They have been busy doing lots of arts and crafts and will be making Rangoli patterns to celebrate the Hindu festival Diwali (Festival of lights) celebrated in November by Hindus in India.

Healthy Lunchbox Guidelines

As parents we sometimes feel pressurised into filling our children’s lunchboxes with the latest gimmicky foods.
Make no mistake; we are targeted in a big way by the food industry. Pre-packaged lunchbox “foods”, high in salt, fat, sugar and additives, are pushed by slick advertising campaigns. Cheap to produce and profitable, these unhealthy products use every trick in the book to get into your child’s lunchbox. Adverts often don’t tell the whole story, and ad-campaigns are designed to get kids nagging their parents. We think that it is about time that parents took the power back!
To keep your child healthy – to prevent obesity and the future risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer – it’s important to provide wholesome grub for your child’s lunch. Good lunchtime food will also help your children to perform well at school.
According to the World Health Organisation, Low intake of fruit and vegetables causes about 19% of gastrointestinal cancer, 31% of ischemic heart disease and 11% of stroke.
Help your child to be healthy, and include fruit when you can! If you don’t have fresh fruit to hand, include some dried fruit like raisins, sultanas, dates or apricots
Lunchbox guidelines
·        Include a piece of fresh fruit in every lunch if you can - as an alternative, you could include a portion of dried fruit (raisins, sultanas or apricots, wrapped in greaseproof paper)
·        Try to include at least one vegetable - many children enjoy scrubbed carrots at lunch
·        For added fibre, choose whole-grain bread for sandwiches – if your children don’t like brown bread, choose a white bread that has some seeds in it
·        If you can, include some salad or fruit in the sandwich - for example peanut butter and banana, ham and tomato, or chicken and lettuce
·        Don’t include fizzy drinks, fruit drinks or sports drinks with lunches - choose water, milk or 100% fruit juice as healthier alternatives
·        Avoid salted, oily foods like crisps (even the “healthy” versions)
·        Steer away from cakes, chocolate and sweets
Tips for Parents
Buy a set of small plastic food boxes for individual portions of chopped vegetables, salad and fruit. You can prepare the contents the night before
and store in the fridge ready for the morning.

Add cherry tomatoes, raw vegetables sticks/shapes, half a red pepper, a piece of fruit, fruit salad or a small pack of dried fruit.
Ask your child to design a healthy lunchbox menu using these tips - a great way to interest them in healthy food.
Add variety by using different bread - wholemeal, pitta, granary, tortilla wraps, bagels, walnut or soft grain bread.
Try rice, noodle or pasta-based salads or a colourful mixed salad roll.
Sweet foods like chocolate and sweets should be occasional treats rather than everyday items. Children these days eat far more sweets than previous generations...and this will cause serious health problems in the future.
Good sandwich fillings include sliced meat, cheese, tuna, egg and peanut butter.
Water and milk are the best lunchbox drinks. Avoid fizzy drinks, colas and flavoured “fruit drinks” which contain very little fruit.

Making a Difference...
Sometimes we all need that extra bit of encouragement to try new things. It can help to involve your children in lunch box planning and/or shopping.
If that still doesn't tempt them, then try a sticker reward system. Each time your child tries a new, healthier lunch box food or drink, give them a star or sticker (on a wall chart or special notebook). Once they collect five stars, give them a small reward, like a comic, family walk or outing. It’s best to make it a non-food reward and agree what it will be at the beginning. Linking a new food to a positive experience can help to establish new tastes and habits.
Keep things positive and don’t force your child to eat anything...this is probably the worst thing you could do.
Make sure your school has a healthy eating policy.

Thank you to everyone who donated a box to our Team Hope Christmas Shoebox appeal. We received 18 boxes!!

As the weather is getting much colder we ask all parents to ensure that their child has a scarf, hat and gloves for outdoor play during the day. Also please supply wellies and raincoats on wet days! Thank You!

Can all parents please ensure they look at the Parents notice board in the hallway regularly for notices and updates about activities, parties etc! Thank You!

Jenny in Montessori will be going on holidays for a month from the 9th November. Ashling Farley will be covering for her in Montessori for that time. Ashling has a Diploma in Montessori Teaching and and Fetac Level 6.

What we are doing in our rooms this month;
Toddlers are learning all about winter, they have been making winter clothes like hats, scarves and woolly jumpers!
Playschool are also learning about winter and have made a winter clothes line. They have learned about the winter weather and what we need to keep us warm and dry! They are making a nursery rhyme book at the moment and their next topic will be My Body! Their stories this month are Little Red Riding Hood and Three Little Pigs!
Montessori are learning all about Winter weather, winter clothes and the Penguin. Their next topic will be All about Me and parts of the body! They have also made some Christmas decorations to help decorate the Solstice Arts Centre Christmas Tree. On the 2nd December at 6.30 pm the Christmas tree lights will be switched on so why not go have a look at all their beautiful decorations!
After school have been busy with a group project making large weather wall chart. They have also been colouring winter pictures, painting and doing dot to dot and colour by number activities. They are playing games too like Twister, snakes and ladders and frustration!

Smile!!!
We have the photographer coming to the centre the 8th of December to take pictures of the children. The pictures are only taken on spec. so parents only pay if you like the finished pictures. Please see the parent’s notice board over the next few weeks for prices etc.

Topic of the month; Food Refusal

Food refusal is a common problem with children up to the age of 5 years, but it may occur at any age. This can be a worrying time for parents so here is a few tips on how to deal with the problem;
  • Offer regular meals and snacks, this is better than letting children ‘pick’ through the day
  • Drinks should not replace meals, drinking all the time will ruin children’s appetite for nutritious meals
  • Parents should try to eat at the same time as children
  • Mealtimes should be an enjoyable experience
  • Sit at the table if possible and use brightly coloured and attractive plates and cups
  • Try to eat in a calm relaxed area without the television as children are easily distracted
  • Try not to rush meals as some children may be slow to eat, a half an hour at a meal is about right.

Halloween (Taken from www.kids-fun-and-games.com)

Younger kids will love the dressing up aspect of Halloween, so be sure to give prizes for best/most creative/funniest costume. Younger children won't last as long at a party so less games will be required than for older kids. Choose 4-5 games and go with the flow of the party when deciding which ones you will play.

Guess The Ghost

Start by having the kids sitting/standing in a circle.

Have one child leave the room and take a large sheet and have another child stand and hide under the sheet. Mix up the remaining children in the room and then allow the child who left the room to come back inside. That child has to guess who's the ghost, by process of elimination they need to figure out which child is hiding under the sheet. Then that "Ghost" goes out of the room and a different child becomes the new ghost, mix up the remaining children and repeat until all of the children have had a turn being the ghost.

Halloween Toe Mural

The perfect Halloween game for kids- they will love getting their toes all icky and sticky. Probably a better outdoor activity because of the 'mess-factor'!

Get a large piece of butcher paper for each child. Instead of finger painting - do "toe" painting with a Halloween theme. Kids must dip their toes and/or feet into pie pans of different color water paints.

Another option is to divide up the kids into several groups to have several different murals being created. Award prizes for creativity, funny, scary, etc.

Marshmallow Bobbing

Young children mostly hate getting their faces wet so this game is a variation on Apple Bobbing.

Take a large tub with icewater in it and float full size marshmallows in it.

Each child is given a straw cut in half. (Shorter straws are easier to suck and hold the marshmallow) They then have to race to see who can suck up a marshmallow the fastest. Once a child scores a marshmallow they can eat it, and sit out to let another child have a turn if they cannot all fit around the basin at one time. Keep rotating until all the kids have had one or two marshmallows.

Monster Freeze Dance

One of those Halloween games for kids that can last as long as you want it to providing you have plenty of Monstery music!

Play Halloween music and have the kids dance around like monsters! The Monster Mash is a great song for this game.

When the music stops the kids freeze in their monster positions.

The first kid to move is out, and the game continues until only one child is left.

Trick For a Treat

Make up a bag with candy and a bag with slips of paper in it. The bag with slips of paper will have all 'trick' apart from one which will have 'treat'. The number of slips of paper should equal the number of children.

All the kids who draw a 'trick' will have a specified trick that they will need to perform to get a piece of candy. One lucky child just wins a special 'treat'. The tricks can be singing a song, doing jumping jacks while turning around, other fun things that are fairly easy for little ones.

Montessori children are busy learning their planets of the Solar system. They had fun in making stars and rockets. They have also learned about human organs with the help of Organ Oscar and senses.

Pass the Pumpkins

Supplies: Pumpkins, gourds, music

This musical chairs type game involves passing small pumpkins and gourds and when the music stops the person without a pumpkin is out. Play until there is a winner.

Kids sit in a circle and you hand out one less pumpkin then children in the group. Then instruct the children to start passing the pumpkins when the music begins to play and continue passing until the music stops.

Once the music stops the child without a pumpkin is out of the game. Now remove a pumpkin from the group and restart the music. This pattern continues until you have one pumpkin with one winner.

Cats Tails Game

Cats Tails - Children's Party Game

Supplies: Strips of cloth (cat tails) and kids with energy

Get long strips of cloth any extra you have a round make them at least one yard long and have the kids put them in the back of there pants (or create little Velcro attachments), with it just hitting the ground.

Then have the kids run after each other trying to step on there tail. When they lose there tail they are out of the game the winner is the last one with a tail. A couple rounds of this game should tire them out real fast.

They also continued on with their autumn theme and learned about the hedgehog and made some spiky hedgehogs. They are currently learning all about road safety as part of ‘Road Safety Week’

Afterschool; have been doing lots of painting, arts and crafts and outside play!

Halloween Recipe ideas

Ingredients

• 1 14-ounce bag individually wrapped caramel candies (about 50)

• 2 tablespoons milk

• 4 to 6 medium apples (see guide, page 123)

• Craft sticks

• Assorted candies

Instructions

1. Place the unwrapped caramels in a shallow microwave-safe bowl.

2. Mix in the milk and microwave on high for 2 minutes, stirring after 1 minute (the caramels will keep their shape as they soften, so be sure to stir them).

3. When the caramels are melted, remove the dish from the microwave with pot holders and stir the sauce until smooth. Set aside to cool slightly.

4. To thoroughly coat an apple, roll it in the caramel sauce, and then hold it upright so the sauce slides down the sides.

5. Generously butter a baking sheet. Twist off the apple stems and spear each fruit with a craft stick.

6. Roll one apple in the caramel sauce until it's thoroughly coated. Place it, stick pointing up, on the baking sheet.

7. Working quickly, coat the remaining apples in the caramel sauce. The caramel coating will be gooey, so refrigerate the apple for 15 minutes or until the caramel is slightly hardened.

8. Holding the apple by the stick, use candy to turn it into a monster.

9. Refrigerate again until the caramel is hardened and the candy is set. Makes 4 to 6.

Flowerhill September Newsletter 2010

Mother Hubbards Newsletter September 2010

Welcome to our first newsletter of the new school year. This month we would like to welcome all of the new children who started with us at the beginning of September and their parents. We hope you are all very happy here at Mother Hubbards.

Happy Birthday

This month we would like to wish the following children a very big Happy Birthday:

• Emma who turned 8 years old on the 1st September.

• Sara who will turn 2 years old on the 9th September.

• Caoimhe who will turn 8 years old on the 27th September.

Reminders

We would like to remind all parents that children should not bring in their own toys to crèche. As you can understand we do not want children’s toys to go home damaged in any way and bringing them in can cause great confusion to other children who think they belong to the crèche. This can cause unwanted bickering and unease amongst the children.

Also we would like to remind parents that if you have not brought in a spare set of clothes for your child could you do so as soon as possible. It is very important that we have them in case of emergency. The following clothes should be provided a t-shirt, sweater, underpants, trousers, socks and a vest. After school children are encouraged to bring in a change of clothes so they can change out of their uniforms. Please remember to label all of your child’s belongings!

Could all parents of children in the Montessori room please send in a scrap book for their child if they have not already done so by Monday 13th September.

Also could all parents of the children in the Montessori room please ensure that they have completed all relevant forms in their welcome pack. Please ensure that these are returned to a member of staff as soon as possible.

Fundraiser

Cheerios Childline Breakfast together week will be on this year from 4th – 10th October. We are going to host our breakfast on Wednesday the 6th October at 9.30a.m.

Last year, hundreds of people held breakfasts with their friends, families and colleagues raising over €130,000 for Childline – enabling them to increase their call answering rate from 47% to 60% allowing them to speak to more children and young children who desperately need their help.

We ask that all parents donate €3 per child for this worthy cause.

(The following article is taken from: www.rollercoaster.ie )
Temper Tantrums

10 Tips from Parents:

The information in this article is a compilation of advice and suggestions provided by parents visiting RollerCoaster.ie It is not a substitute for medical or other professional advice and services.

1. I find that if I get down on the floor the minute we get home before changing, putting on dinner etc. and play/read/rough and tumble for a while that she gets her fill of "mommy attention" and will then happily potter around after me being helpful while I am doing jobs.

2. The only way my 2 year old will behave when I meet a friend for coffee etc. is if my friend also has a small child so they can play together. If its just adults she really acts up.

3. My daughter tends to lose the plot in the evenings . I think it's due to the fact that by the time she gets home she's had a long tiring day and is just cranky because of exhaustion. It's very frustrating. I try to have colouring pages ready for her or something to distract her. She gets bored with all her colouring books so I print off clipart or colouring pages from the internet.

4. I definitely find that I get a better result than my husband does because I stay calm longer and give her a couple of chances to redeem herself whereas he's quicker to give out and that results in more tantrums. I'm just as strict but calmer about it (although sometimes I have to leave the room to achieve that!!)

5. We use a star chart . She gets stars for being good and black clouds for being bold. Make sure they can get a few stars easily for doing things like eating dinner or brushing teeth. At the end of the week she gets 70c pocket money but 10c is deducted for each black cloud. She gets a warning before a cloud is given so she has the chance to redeem herself but it's working very well

6. When things are calm pretend to have a 'chat'. Start the conversion with "You know what drives me mad" etc. Say a few things and then get her to say her few things. You might just drag out of her what is wrong

7. We’ve decided not to respond to whines, whinges and demands, and only to pleases, thank yous, etc - this is turning out really well.

8. Try not to be embarrassed when she acts up in public, anyone who has children will understand and sympathise, those who don't, have it all ahead of them in the future so if they give you any funny looks just think to yourself 'karma', it will come back on them threefold

9. Don't let the presence of a stranger stop you from issuing a reprimand.

10. I realized that a quiet but firm voice, simply saying no and not overreacting to his little fit is enough to make him stop and take notice.

Reminders.

September.

We will be hosting parent’s teachers meeting on the 7th October 2010 from 6.30 PM until 8. Pm .for parents who can’ make it you can always talk to staff about your child development

Also could all parents of the children in the Montessori room please ensure that they have completed all relevant forms in their welcome pack? Please ensure that these are returned to a member of staff as soon as possible.

Fundraiser

Cheerios Childline Breakfast together week will be on this year from 4th – 10th October. We are going to host our breakfast on Wednesday the 6th October at 9.30a.m as on this day we have all the children.

Last year, hundreds of people held breakfasts with their friends, families and colleagues raising over €130,000 for Childline – enabling them to increase their call answering rate from 47% to 60% allowing them to speak to more children and young children who desperately need their help.

We ask that all parents donate €2 per child for this worthy cause if you can.
